Summer school participants who have not made their own lodging arrangements will be accommodated in Hotel Flandrischer Hof or Hotel Elite. They will receive an email advice with hotel details at the end of June.

It combines regional trains of the German Railway (DB) and trams and buses of the city of Cologne (KVB). There is an integrated fare system for the Cologne/Bonn region (VRS), so one just needs one ticket to get around using these means of transport.

A single ticket for the Cologne city area (including Cologne/Bonn Airport) is called CityTicket, price class 1b, and costs 2.30 €. It can be purchased at a VRS vending machine inside every tram or bus and at some tram stops (only coins are accepted). It is valid from the moment of purchase and does not need to be validated. A CityTicket cannot be purchased on trains, in general. It must be purchased at a DB vending machine at the train station before boarding the train. There are two types of DB vending machines: On a vending machine with a touch-screen push the VRS button and follow the instructions. Usually coins, notes, and EC-cards are accepted (no credit cards). On a vending machine with a numerical key-pad you need to input a 4-digit code of your destination according to the displayed list or simply 2132 for the Cologne city area. Usually coins and notes are accepted.

There are several possible ways how to get from Cologne/Bonn Airport to the hotels using the public transport depending on the day and the time of day. We give a brief description of the most straightforward one which should work almost any time. For other options please consult the KVB timetable (you can input the address of the hotel there). In any case, a CityTicket 1b is needed (see above for more information). The journey takes at least 35 minutes.

To Hotel Flandrischer Hof: Take regional train (S-Bahn) S13 from the airport train station to Köln Hansaring (the first stop after Cologne central station). Change to Tram 12 (direction Zollstock Südfriedhof) or Tram 15 (direction Ubierring). Both are underground lines (U-Bahn). Get off the tram at Rudolfplatz.

To Hotel Elite: Take regional train (S-Bahn) S13 or regional train RE8 from the airport train station to Köln Messe/Deutz (the last stop before Cologne central station). Change to Tram 9, direction Sülz Hermeskeiler Platz (U-Bahn/underground). Get off the tram at Dasselstraße/Bahnhof Süd.

From Hotel Elite: It is a 20-minute walk, please consult the plan.

From Hotel Flandrischer Hof: You can walk or take a bus. Get on the bus at Rudolfplatz. Take Bus 136 or 146 to Hildegardis Krankenhaus (runs every 5 minutes on weekdays). Buy a short distance ticket (Kurzstrecke) at a machine inside the bus, price class K, 1.50 €. After getting off, cross the street at the traffic lights behind the bus and continue straight on Weyertal. The Institute is on your left after a two-minute walk.
