Introduction

  • We offer all students of the mathematical institute an Unix- an a WindowsXP-account.
There are two Rooms (0034 and 0035) with round about 30 Workstations for students to use. All workstations are set up with Windows Xp and REDHAT LINUX as a dualbootsystem. To use these workstations, you need an account, which is for all students who are registered at the MI, available at the office in room 0036.

  • All user-specific data will be saved central, on the one hand on a Windows Xp server and on the other hand on your own user-Unix-homedirectory , so it's not on the workstations local harddrive! That implies that all of your personal configurations you made, are availeable on all Workstations you log into in this building.

  • To log on at a workstation you have to press Ctrl+Alt+Entf, then you fill in your username and password in the right spaces and check the choice in Domäne, which should be MI-WIN2003. Now press "OK".

  • Additional to the local drives (diskdrive a:, harddrives c: and d:) a virtual drive e:, the UNIX-homedirectory is for data saving available. In case of different handling with user-related data, the user passwords are in general not identical. More precisely the two passwords are only identical if you set it like that. If they are different from each other you will ask to type in your Unix-password after logging in to windows XP, to connect to your homedevice e:.

  • On your first login, you will be forced to change your windows-password once. If you like to change it later on, you have to press Ctrl+Alt+Entf and click on the button "Kennwort ändern" or "Change password"

  • Mainly there is the following software available:
    • Microsoft Office 2003 includes Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, InfoPath and Publisher.
    • Adobe Acrobat Professional.
    • MiKTeX as well as TeX-spezific editors WinEdt, TeXnicCenter and XEmacs (LaTeX).
    • Mathematical software: Maple, Matlab, Mathematica.
    • Netscape, Mozilla and Internet Explorer for surfing the web.
    • Mozilla Thunderbird for administration of emails.
    • Hummingbird Exceed, switching the workstation to a adequate X-Terminal for login to Unix-workstations.
  • To log off, click in the startmenu at Abmelden. DO NOT shut off the worstation, please!!!

  • Last but not least, in case of the security of the hardware and other users, it is forbidden to eat, drink or smoke in the area. We hope you enjoy your work at our workstations.
