Sandwich PhD:

The network's aim has been to educate Chinese PhD students in a sandwich PhD programme. In total, 15 scholarships have been available over the period of three years. For the academic year 2002/03 five scholarships have been awarded, for 2003/04 seven scholarships have been awarded, and the remaining three for 2004/5.

The scheme for the sandwich PhD programme is as follows: A Chinese student is jointly supervised by a Chinese and by a European supervisor. Both are supposed to be staff of partner institutions of the network. The student with a masters degree (3-year PhD-programme) typically spends the first year of PhD studies at a European partner institution and the remaining years in China, with some extended visits to Europe during the second and third year of PhD studies. The student without a masters degree (5-year PhD-programme) spends the second year of PhD studies at a European partner institution and the remaining years in China, with some extended visits to Europe during the third to fifth year of PhD studies.

Scholarships:

Scholarships include funding for the one-year stay at a European partner institution. Hence, the monthly rate of the scholarship has been about 700-750 Euro. In addition, travel between China and Europe and also university fees are covered. Moreover, upon successful completion of the first (or second) and second (or third) year of PhD studies some funding is provided for visits to Europe in the following years of study (as long as funding is available for the project).

Eligible applicants:

Chinese students, holding a master's degree (or about to hold a master's degree) can apply to spend their first year of their PhD (three years programme) at one of the European partner institutions. Chinese students who start their PhD (five years programme) directly after the BSc can apply to spend their second year of their PhD at one of the European partner institutions.

Application procedure:

A Chinese student who wishes to apply for a scholarship first has to find a Chinese and a European supervisor. Then the student applies simultaneously to the European host institution for a place and to the network for a scholarship. The European supervisor gives advice on how to apply to the host university.

The application to the network had to be sent, preferably by email, to the coordinator (Steffen Koenig). An application had to include the following information:

  • Letter of application, clearly stating the names of the two supervisors and the area of the intended PhD project, and the preferred starting date of the scholarship.
  • CV, giving details on academic education and any other relevant information (publications, prizes, etc).
  • Names and (email) addresses of two referees. The Chinese and European supervisors may act as referees. At least one of the referees has to know the student's previous career and at least one of the referees has to know the PhD project. References will be solicited by the management team and should not be sent with the application.
