Local Directions

It combines regional trains of the German Railway (DB) and trams and buses of the city of Cologne (KVB). There is an integrated fare system for the Cologne/Bonn region (VRS), so one just needs one ticket to get around using these means of transport.

A single ticket for the Cologne city area (including the Cologne/Bonn Airport) is called CityTicket, price class 1b, and costs 2.20 €. It can be purchased at a VRS vending machine inside every tram or bus and at some tram stops (only coins are accepted). It is valid from the moment of purchase and does not need to be validated. A CityTicket cannot be purchased on trains, in general. It must be purchased at a DB vending machine at the train station before boarding the train. There are two types of DB vending machines: On a vending machine with a touch-screen push the VRS button and follow the instructions. Usually coins, notes, and EC-cards are accepted (no credit cards). On a vending machine with a numerical key-pad you need to input a 4-digit code of your destination according to the displayed list or simply 2132 for the Cologne city area. Usually coins and notes are accepted.

There are several possible ways how to get from the Cologne/Bonn Airport to the hotels using the public transport depending on the day and the time of day. We give a brief description of the most straightforward one which should work almost any time. For other options, please, consult the KVB timetable (you can input the address of the hotel there). In any case, a CityTicket 1b is needed (see above for more information). The journey takes at least 35 minutes.

To Hotel Elite: Take regional train (S-Bahn) S13 or regional train RE8 from the airport train station to Köln Hauptbahnhof (central station). Change to any regional train that passes through Köln Süd (most likely RE5 or RB25 direction Koblenz, RB24 direction Gerolstein or Kall). Get off at Köln Süd and use the exit that lies in the direction your train just came from (most likely you will arrive on Track 1 and will first need to cross to the other platform, Tracks 3,4, using an underpass lying in the opposite direction). The street exit (Zülpicher Straße) lies under a train overpass. Go slightly to the right, cross the street, cross Dasselstraße and look for the hotel sign.

To Hotel Conti: Take regional train (S-Bahn) S13 or regional train RE8 from the airport train station to Köln Messe/Deutz. Change to Tram (U-Bahn) number 1 in the direction Weiden. Get off at Moltkestraße. Walk back on Aachener Straße on the right hand side of the street until you cross Brüsseler Straße. Turn right and look for the hotel on your left.

From Hotel Elite: Go to train station Köln Süd and take the next train (most likely from Track 4) to Köln Hauptbahnhof (central station). Change for regional train (S-Bahn) S13 to Köln/Bonn Flughafen. Alternatively, follow Zülpicher Straße towards the city center to Zülpicher Platz. From there take Tram 12 to Hansaring. At Hansaring change for regional train (S-Bahn) S13 to the airport.

From Hotel Conti: When you leave the hotel, go right until you reach Aachener Straße. Turn right and follow Aachener Straße until you reach Rudolfplatz. Take Tram 1 to Köln Messe/Deutz, change for a train (RE8, S13) to Köln/Bonn Flughafen. Alternatively, take Tram (U-Bahn) 12 from Rudolfplatz to Hansaring and change there for train S13 to the airport.

From Hotel Elite: It is a 20-minute walk, please consult the plan.

From Hotel Conti: You can walk or take a bus. If you go by bus, after leaving the hotel go right to Aachener Straße, turn left and continue on Aachener Straße until you cross Moltkestraße. You will find the bus stop "Moltkestraße" on your left. Take Bus 136 or 146 to Hildegardis Krankenhaus (runs every 7 to 8 minutes on weekends, 5 minutes on weekdays). Buy a short distance ticket (Kurzstrecke) at a machine inside the bus, price class K, 1.30 €. After getting off, cross the street at the traffic lights behind the bus and continue straight on Weyertal. The Institute is on your left after a two-minute walk.

A CityTicket 1b is needed (see above for more information). The journey takes at least 50 minutes. Take regional train (S-Bahn) S13 or regional train RE8 from the airport train station to Köln Messe/Deutz. Change to Tram (U-Bahn) number 9 in the direction Sülz Hermeskeiler Platz. Get off at Neumarkt. Change for Bus 136 or 146, get off at Hildegardis Krankenhaus. Cross the street at the traffic lights behind the bus and continue straight on Weyertal. The Institute is on your left after a two-minute walk.

Due to the Cologne Marathon on Sunday, October 8, a disruption of bus and tram services as well as temporary street closures will occur. The course of the Marathon includes streets close to the University and the Hotels.

It is recommended to walk from Hotel Conti to the Math Institute on Sunday morning since Buses 136 and 146 will be diverted. On your way you will need to cross two streets included in the Marathon. The first runners are expected on Richard-Wagner-Straße (zoom in the plan around Hotel Conti) at approximately 9:35am. Be sure to cross the street before that.

Everybody walking from Hotel Conti or Hotel Elite will need to cross the Universitätsstraße, where the runners are expected already at 9:20am. The most convenient place to cross is the plaza in front of the main university building (marked in the plan) because the street (and the Marathon) goes under the plaza level.
